Improve Healthcare Quality, Outcomes and Value

Organizations aim to improve quality, outcomes, and value through optimizing the use and integration of digital therapeutics and incorporate DTx into clinical guidelines. To do so, DTx must deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions to patients through high quality software programs.

Collaborate to Advance Thinking

A collaborative approach between industry and digital device companies helps to enhance and advance the interplay of DTx. To execute this, there are various roadblocks and challenges to implement DTx solutions. There is a need for educational solutions, clinical evidence, funding, and workflow integration in order to drive advancements. Collaboration between industry and digital companies is key to connect digital innovations with science to allow for innovation along with industry validation.

Care Beyond the Hospital

The shifting care paradigm is moving care from outside the four walls of the hospital; and DTx is helping to move that shift. Technological advancements are entering the market to disrupt the traditional aspects of care delivery; redefining the patient-provider relationship and saving money on in-hospital care. Technology will provide solutions to intervene with preventative strategies outside of the hospitals, saving time, reducing costs, and improving workflow efficiencies.

Data is Essential but Impossible

The more you know about a patient, the more personalized care can be. However, there remain clear roadblocks in data ethics; HIPPA privacy issues prevent access and availability to data. Applying DTx to patient care is challenged by the factor of privacy and data issues.

CASE STUDY: Video App Improving Provider-Patient Communication and Engagement

David Langer, Chair of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hospital and Vice President of Neurosurgery for Northwell Health’s Western Region developed an app that enhances patient encounters and improves satisfaction scores.

Within one hour, people forget half of what they have been told. This provides the proof that awareness and education is important for continuing care outside of the hospital.

In this example, patient encounters are videotaped to recall details of information exchanged following their visit; delivered via the app Playback Health. 90% of patients access the app to view their video patient-provider encounter and can share the recording with family, friends, and other providers on their care team. The goal is to educate, inform, and empower patients post-visit.

Although challenges and roadblocks exist, leading industry and DTx partnerships continue to evolve to reshape the standard of care delivery, bringing both patient and technology to the forefront to advance patient outcomes, reduce costs, and improve workflow efficiencies.
